Each year in Japan is assigned one of twelve animals: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, boar. The cycle repeats every twelve years. New Year cards, decorations and shop displays all carry that year's animal. Asking what animal someone was born under is a softer way of asking their age, since the answer narrows it to every twelfth year.

Japan names each year after an animal, in a fixed cycle of twelve: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and boar. It came from China, and versions of it exist across East Asia, though the animals are not identical everywhere. In Japan the last one is the wild boar, while in China it is the pig.

You will see the year's animal everywhere from December onward, on New Year cards, on shop displays, on little clay figures. People also use it socially. Asking someone what their animal is sounds lighter than asking their age, and once you know it, you can work out their age within twelve years.

There is a longer version too, combining the twelve animals with a set of ten signs, which makes a cycle of sixty. That is why a sixtieth birthday has its own celebration in Japan: you have come back around to the year you were born in.

The system is the same and came from China, but the animals differ slightly. Japan's twelfth is the wild boar rather than the pig, and Vietnam uses a cat where others use the rabbit.

QDoes your animal say something about your personality?

People talk about it that way, in the same light spirit as Western star signs. It is not taken seriously by most, but it comes up in conversation and in New Year fortune features.

QWhen does the new animal year start?

In modern Japan it changes on January 1st, along with the calendar year. Some traditional practices count from the start of spring in February instead, so fortune-telling articles sometimes differ.
