Japanese people send New Year postcards to relatives, friends, colleagues and clients. If posted by a set date in December, the post office holds them and delivers them all on the morning of January 1st. Each card carries a lottery number. If there has been a death in your family that year, you do not send them, and you tell people in advance.

Nengajo are New Year cards, and the system around them is more organized than a Christmas card. You buy special postcards, often printed with the animal of the coming zodiac year, write them in December, and post them by a set deadline.

The post office then holds every single one and delivers them all together on the morning of January 1st, so you wake up to a stack. Each card has a lottery number printed on it, and the winning numbers are announced later in January, with prizes. There is one rule that matters.

If someone in your immediate family has died during the year, you do not send nengajo. Instead you send a short notice in November or early December telling people not to expect one and asking them not to send one either. The volume has been falling steadily for years as people switch to messaging, and the post office now prints far fewer cards than it once did.

QWhat if I get one from someone I didn't send to?

You send one back, and it is still fine if it arrives within the first week of January. This is common enough that people keep spare cards for exactly this.

QWhat is the mourning notice?

A mochu hagaki, sent in late autumn, informing people that your family is in mourning and that you will not be sending New Year greetings. It is a plain, restrained card with no decoration.

QIs the custom dying out?

It is shrinking. Issue numbers have fallen sharply over two decades, and younger people increasingly send messages instead. Business use has also dropped as companies cut costs.
