Omisoka is December 31st. Unlike the loud countdown parties in many countries, the Japanese version is quiet and domestic. Families finish cleaning the house, eat buckwheat noodles called toshikoshi soba, and watch a long music program on television. At midnight, temples ring their bells 108 times, and some people head straight out to a shrine.

New Year's Eve in Japan is called omisoka, and it is probably quieter than you would expect. There are no big countdown parties for most families. Instead, people finish cleaning the whole house, because you are supposed to start the year without last year's dust.
In the evening the family eats buckwheat noodles. The noodles are long and thin and cut easily, which is said to mean cutting off the troubles of the old year. Then everyone sits in front of the television and watches a music show that runs for more than four hours.
Just before midnight, temples begin ringing their bells one hundred and eight times, once for each earthly desire that troubles us. It is a strange and very calm way to end a year, and I would not change it.

QWhy 108 bell strikes?
In Buddhism, 108 is the number of bonno, the desires and attachments that cause suffering. Each strike is said to clear one of them before the new year starts.
QIs nobody out partying?
Young people in cities do go out, and Shibuya gets crowded. But the standard image of omisoka is a family at home in front of the television, and that is still what most of the country does.
QWhat do people eat on New Year's Day itself?
Osechi, a set of small dishes packed in stacked lacquer boxes, and ozoni, a soup with rice cake. Almost every dish in osechi has a meaning built on a pun, like a word for a fish roe that sounds like "many children."
