The crane and the turtle appear together on wedding gifts, New Year decorations, kimono and old prints. A saying gives the crane a thousand years and the turtle ten thousand, so together they stand for a long life. Cranes are also said to pair for life, which is why they belong on wedding items in particular.

The crane and the turtle are the standard Japanese pair for longevity and good luck. An old saying gives the crane a thousand years and the turtle ten thousand, and putting them together on an object is a wish for a long life. Neither figure is accurate, of course.

Cranes live a few decades and some turtles do exceed a century, but the numbers were never meant as biology. The crane carries a second meaning: cranes are believed to stay with one partner, so a crane on a wedding envelope or a bride's kimono is a wish for a lasting marriage.

This is also why the folded paper crane became the standard origami shape, and why a thousand of them strung together are given to someone who is ill or sent as a prayer for peace. You will see the pair constantly once you start looking: on sake bottles, on New Year food boxes, on old coins, and stitched into the back of a formal kimono.

QDo cranes really live a thousand years?

No. Cranes live a few decades in the wild and somewhat longer in captivity, and even the longest-lived turtles fall far short of ten thousand years. The numbers are a formula for very long, not a measurement.

QWhy give a thousand paper cranes to someone who is ill?

The crane stands for long life, and folding a thousand is an act of sustained effort on someone's behalf. It is usually done by a group, and the point is as much the visible time invested as the wish itself.
