A furoshiki is a square cloth for wrapping things, and it is one of the most quietly clever objects in Japanese daily life. There is no fixed shape: you put the thing in the middle and tie the corners, and the knot you choose turns the same cloth into a parcel, a shoulder bag, a carrier for two bottles, or a neat cover for a formal gift.
When you are done it folds to nothing and weighs nothing. The name comes from the public bath, where people are said to have spread such a cloth to stand on while changing and then wrapped their clothes in it.
Formal use survives in gift giving, where the box is carried wrapped and the cloth is untied and taken away by the giver rather than handed over. Everyday use faded in the plastic bag era and has come back since shops began charging for bags.
風呂敷は物を包むための四角い布で、日本の暮らしの中でも最も静かに巧みな道具のひとつです。決まった形はありません。真ん中に品を置いて角を結ぶだけで、選ぶ結び方によって同じ布が包みにも、肩に掛ける鞄にも、瓶を二本運ぶ道具にも、贈り物をきちんと覆う布にもなります。
使い終われば、たたんでほとんど体積も重さもなくなります。名は公衆浴場に由来し、着替えるときにこの布を敷いて上に立ち、脱いだ衣服を包んだことからだと言われます。
改まった使い方は贈答に残っていて、箱は包んだまま運び、布はほどいて贈った側が持ち帰ります。日常での使用はレジ袋の時代に廃れましたが、袋が有料になってから戻ってきました。

No. In formal gift giving the cloth is the giver's, used to keep the box clean on the way. They untie it at the door and take it home. If someone does give you the cloth as well, they will say so clearly.
いいえ。改まった贈答では布は贈る側のもので、道中、箱を汚さないために使います。玄関でほどいて持ち帰ります。布ごと差し上げる場合は、はっきりそう言われます。

どの大きさを買えばいいですか。
Around seventy centimeters square handles most everyday things, including a bento or a bottle of wine. A hundred centimeters or more makes a usable shoulder bag. Very small ones are for wrapping a lunch box only.
70センチ角前後で、弁当箱やワインの瓶など日常のものはたいてい包めます。1メートル以上あれば肩に掛ける鞄として使えます。ごく小さいものは弁当包み専用です。

「風呂敷」の名は、室町から江戸にかけての風呂で衣類を包み、また床に敷いたことに由来するとされます。それ以前は「平包」などと呼ばれていました。結び方には真結び、平包み、すいか包み、瓶包みなどの型があり、環境省が使い方を紹介する冊子を出したこともあります。贈答用には縮緬や絹の上等なものを使い、家紋を入れることもあります。近年は撥水加工を施したものや、大判の綿のものが日用品として売られています。
