There is no fixed shape: you put the thing in the middle and tie the corners, and the knot you choose turns the same cloth into a parcel, a shoulder bag, a carrier for two bottles, or a neat cover for a formal gift.
When you are done it folds to nothing and weighs nothing. The name comes from the public bath, where people are said to have spread such a cloth to stand on while changing and then wrapped their clothes in it.
Formal use survives in gift giving, where the box is carried wrapped and the cloth is untied and taken away by the giver rather than handed over. Everyday use faded in the plastic bag era and has come back since shops began charging for bags.

「風呂敷」の名は、室町から江戸にかけての風呂で衣類を包み、また床に敷いたことに由来するとされます。それ以前は「平包」などと呼ばれていました。結び方には真結び、平包み、すいか包み、瓶包みなどの型があり、環境省が使い方を紹介する冊子を出したこともあります。贈答用には縮緬や絹の上等なものを使い、家紋を入れることもあります。近年は撥水加工を施したものや、大判の綿のものが日用品として売られています。
