A furoshiki is a square cloth used to wrap and carry almost anything.
A furoshiki is a square cloth used for wrapping. You lay the object in the middle and tie the corners, and the same cloth can carry a lunch box, a bottle, a gift or a watermelon depending on how you knot it. When you arrive, you untie it and fold it away flat. It has drawn renewed interest since shops started charging for plastic bags.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
A furoshiki is a square cloth for wrapping things, and it is one of the most quietly clever objects in Japanese daily life. There is no fixed shape: you put the thing in the middle and tie the corners, and the knot you choose turns the same cloth into a parcel, a shoulder bag, a carrier for two bottles, or a neat cover for a formal gift.
When you are done it folds to nothing and weighs nothing. The name comes from the public bath, where people are said to have spread such a cloth to stand on while changing and then wrapped their clothes in it.
Formal use survives in gift giving, where the box is carried wrapped and the cloth is untied and taken away by the giver rather than handed over. Everyday use faded in the plastic bag era and has drawn renewed interest since shops began charging for bags.

In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QDo I keep the cloth if someone brings me a gift in one?
ANo. In formal gift giving the cloth is the giver's, used to keep the box clean on the way. They untie it at the door and take it home. If someone does give you the cloth as well, they will say so clearly.
QWhat size should I buy?
AAround seventy centimeters square handles most everyday things, including a bento or a bottle of wine. A hundred centimeters or more makes a usable shoulder bag. Very small ones are for wrapping a lunch box only.

Background
