The Imperial Palace is where the Emperor lives, in central Tokyo. The grounds are the former Edo Castle, the seat of the shoguns until 1868, when the Emperor moved from Kyoto. Most of the site is closed, but the East Gardens are open free of charge, and the famous view is of two bridges at the main gate, together called Nijubashi.

The Imperial Palace sits in the middle of Tokyo, on the grounds of Edo Castle, which was the shogun's castle for two and a half centuries. When the shogunate ended in 1868 the Emperor moved here from Kyoto and simply took over the site. Visitors are usually surprised that there is no castle tower.

It burned in a great fire in 1657 and was never rebuilt, because by then the country was at peace and the money went to rebuilding the city instead. The stone base is still there and you can climb it, because the East Gardens are open to anyone, free.

The view everyone photographs is from the plaza outside: a stone arch bridge in front and an iron bridge behind, together called Nijubashi, double bridge, from a wooden two-tiered bridge that once stood there. The public crosses them twice a year.

QCan you go inside?

The East Gardens, the old castle keep area, are open free most days. The inner grounds require a booked tour, and the palace buildings themselves are not open except on two days a year.

QWhich day can you see the Emperor?

January 2nd and the Emperor's birthday, February 23rd. The family appears behind glass on a balcony and the crowd waves small flags. Anyone can go, including foreign visitors.

QWhy is it called the double bridge?

The name comes from an older wooden bridge built in two tiers at that spot. Today people use it for the pair of bridges you see, the stone one in front and the iron one behind.
