店員さんに言われる言葉55選|外国人に英語で意味と返し方を教えよう
日本を旅する外国人にとって、難しいのは自分が話す言葉より、店員さんや駅員さんに言われる言葉です。敬語で、しかも早口で言われるので「いま何て言われたの?」とよく聞かれます。このページでは、レジ・飲食店・ホテル・駅のホームで何度も耳にする決まり文句55と、その本当の意味、いちばん簡単な返し方を英語つきでまとめました。
📝 教える前に知っておきたいこと
- 客が敬語で答える必要はないと伝えましょう。店員さんは客にとても丁寧に話しますが、客は簡単な「です・ます」や、ひとことで返せば十分です。
- 「よろしいですか」「よろしいでしょうか」で終わる質問は、店員さんが「これで大丈夫か」を確かめているのだと教えましょう。「はい」ははい、「大丈夫です」はたいてい「いりません」の意味です。
- ここに並ぶ言葉の多くは習慣で言うもので、返事はいりません。軽くうなずけば十分丁寧だと伝えましょう。
- 聞き取れなかったら「すみません、もう一度お願いします」がどこでも通じます。品物や画面を指さすのも助けになります。
- 電車のアナウンスは録音で、駅ごとに繰り返されます。一日二日で耳が覚えてしまうと伝えると安心してもらえます。

A very polite "got it" used by staff after you order or ask for something. It means your request went through. You don't need to reply. Customers don't say it back; it would sound like you are the one taking the order.
注文や頼みごとをしたあとに店員さんが言う、とても丁寧な「わかりました」です。頼んだことが通ったという意味で、返事はいりません。客が言い返すことはなく、言うと自分が注文を受ける側のように聞こえます。

A formal cousin of sumimasen. Staff use it before asking you to do something, or to thank you when you hand over exact change. It is simply politeness, not a sign that something is wrong.
「すみません」の改まった親戚のような言葉です。店員さんが何かをお願いする前や、ちょうどの金額を渡されたときのお礼に使います。単なる丁寧さの表れで、何か問題があるという合図ではありません。

Said when your food arrives or when it is finally your turn, even if you only waited ten seconds. It works more like "here you go" than a real apology. A nod or "arigato gozaimasu" is a fine reply.
料理が来たときや順番が来たときに、待ったのがたった10秒でも言います。本当の謝罪というより「はい、どうぞ」に近い言葉です。うなずくか「ありがとうございます」で返せば十分です。

Asked at nearly every chain store and convenience store. Most visitors don't have one, so just say "nai desu" or "daijobu desu," or shake your head a little. Some stores will offer to make one for you.

Some staff say "reshito wa irimasu ka" instead. "Hai, onegaishimasu" means yes; "daijobu desu" means no. Keep receipts if you plan to track spending or return something.

Often shortened to "oshiharai wa?" Answer with "genkin de" (cash), "kado de" (card), or the name of the IC card or app you use. Showing your card is also fine.

Japanese credit cards can be split into installments at the register, so staff sometimes check. With a foreign card the answer is almost always "hai." It does not mean anything is wrong with your card.
日本のクレジットカードはレジで分割払いにできるので、確認されることがあります。海外のカードなら答えはほぼ「はい」です。カードに問題があるという意味ではありません。

Bills are often counted out in front of you, then coins and the receipt follow. Take it and nod. There is no tipping in Japan, so do not leave the change behind.

A standard goodbye as you leave a shop or restaurant. You can walk out without a word, but a quick "gochisosama deshita" at a restaurant or "arigato" at a shop is a nice touch.

At izakaya and many restaurants, drinks are ordered first, before food. Answer with the drink plus "onegaishimasu," for example "nama biru, onegaishimasu" (a draft beer, please).

A seating question at restaurants that still have smoking areas. Say "suimasen" (I don't smoke) for a non-smoking seat. Indoor smoking rules became much stricter in 2020, so you will hear this less than before. Note that "suimasen" here is "don't smoke," not "sorry."
まだ喫煙席がある飲食店で、席を決めるために聞かれます。禁煙席がよければ「吸いません」。屋内の喫煙のルールは2020年に大きく厳しくなったので、以前ほどは聞かれません。ここでの「吸いません」は「すみません(ごめんなさい)」ではなく「吸わない」の意味です。

Say your family name, perhaps slowly or spelled out, or show the booking on your phone. Non-Japanese names can be hard to catch, so a screen is often quickest.

Eating alone is completely normal in Japan, and many ramen shops and bars are built for it. Just say "hai" or hold up one finger. "Ohitori-sama" is also a word for doing things solo.
