📝 教える前に知っておきたいこと
- 道を聞くなら駅員か交番がいちばんだと教えましょう。通りすがりの人もたいてい親切ですが、その辺りをよく知らないのに手伝おうとしてくれることもあります。
- 地図や目的地の名前を書いたものを見せるようすすめましょう。地名、特に長い駅名は、耳で聞くと聞き取りにくいものです。
- 大きな駅の多くは出口やホームに番号があり、表示は日本語と英語の両方です。改札を出る前に出口の番号を確かめておきましょう。
- 都市部ではカード払いが広く使えますが、小さな店や神社、地方では現金のみのこともあります。念のため現金も持っておくよう伝えましょう。

Toire is the everyday word. "Otearai" is a politer version you may see on signs. Stations, department stores, and many konbini have restrooms you can use.

Important because express and rapid trains skip stations. Station staff on the platform, or the person next to you, can usually answer with a quick yes or no.
急行や快速は駅を飛ばすので大事な質問です。ホームの駅員や、となりの人がたいてい「はい」か「いいえ」ですぐ答えてくれます。

You will see 乗り換え or 乗換 on signs pointing to other lines. Transferring between different railway companies may mean going through another set of ticket gates.

Pronounced with a long "a" (chaa-ji). Machines at stations let you add money to an IC transit card. If the gate beeps and closes, you probably need to top up.

Prices are usually clearly marked, and bargaining is not normal in shops. Staff often show the total on the register screen, so you don't have to catch every number.

Only at shops that offer tax-free service, usually shown by a sign, and only above a minimum purchase. You need your passport with you. The rules and procedure have been changing, so follow the shop's instructions.

The opposite is "toi" (far). If you hear "chotto toi desu," it probably means quite far, since "chotto" softens bad news.
