Suica, Pasmo, Icoca and their regional equivalents are prepaid cards you tap at ticket gates. They are mutually compatible nationwide, so a card bought in Tokyo works in Osaka and Fukuoka. They also work as small-payment money at convenience stores, vending machines, lockers and many shops, which makes them the single most useful thing a visitor can get.

Suica、Pasmo、ICOCA

The single most useful thing to get when you arrive in Japan is a transit IC card. They have different names depending on where they were issued, Suica and Pasmo in Tokyo, Icoca in Osaka, and about ten others, but they are mutually compatible, so one card works on trains and buses almost anywhere in the country.

You load it with cash at a machine, then simply tap it on the reader at the ticket gate as you walk through. There is no need to work out the fare in advance, which matters because Japanese fares vary by distance and the route maps are complicated. The second use is the one visitors do not expect.

The same card is accepted as electronic money at convenience stores, vending machines, coin lockers, station kiosks and a great many ordinary shops. So in a country that still runs heavily on cash, this one card covers most small payments, and you can put it in your phone.

QWhich one should I buy?

Whichever is sold where you land. They all work nationwide. Note that at times some cards have had purchase restrictions due to chip shortages, and visitor-only versions are sold at airports.

QCan I use it on the shinkansen?

For some sections with prior registration, but generally you buy a separate ticket for the shinkansen. The IC card is for local trains, subways and buses.

QCan I get my deposit back?

Yes. Cards carry a five hundred yen deposit, refundable at a station office along with the remaining balance, though a handling fee may be deducted from the balance.
