The interesting question is not why there are so many, but why they survive outdoors, unattended, full of cash, without being broken into.

Japan has around four million vending machines, which works out at about one for every thirty people. You find them not only in stations but halfway up mountain trails, next to rice fields and on quiet residential streets.
In winter, the same machine sells cold drinks and hot ones, and the hot cans are genuinely hot. The part worth thinking about is not the number. It is that these machines stand outside all night, unattended, holding cash, and are almost never broken into.
That says something about how safe the streets are, and also about land: in Japanese cities, a strip of ground too small for a shop is exactly the right size for a machine. So the vending machine is partly a story about crime, and partly a story about space.
日本にはおよそ400万台の自動販売機があり、人口30人に1台ほどの計算になります。駅だけでなく、登山道の途中にも、田んぼのそばにも、静かな住宅街にもあります。
冬には同じ機械が冷たい飲みものと温かい飲みものを売り、温かい缶は本当に熱いです。考える価値があるのは台数ではありません。この機械が一晩じゅう屋外に無人で立ち、現金を抱えたまま、ほとんど壊されないということです。
それは街の安全さを物語ると同時に、土地の話でもあります。日本の都市では、店を建てるには狭すぎる細長い土地が、自販機にはちょうどよいのです。つまり自動販売機は、半分は治安の話で、半分は土地の話なのです。

Very rarely, and that is the genuinely unusual part. Low street crime plus the fact that machines are usually in sight of a house or a camera keeps them safe.
ほとんどありません。そこが本当に珍しい点です。街頭犯罪が少ないことに加え、たいてい家やカメラの視界に入る場所にあることが効いています。
QIs it true they sell strange things?
変わったものが売られているというのは本当ですか。
There are machines selling dashi stock, canned bread, fresh eggs and umbrellas, and they get a lot of attention online. But over ninety percent of machines sell drinks, so the strange ones are the exception.
出汁、缶入りのパン、卵、傘を売る機械はあり、ネットでよく話題になります。ただ9割以上は飲料の機械なので、変わったものは例外です。

現金なしで買えますか。
Most machines now take IC transit cards like Suica, and many accept phone payments. Older ones in rural areas are still coins only, and some will not take large notes.
今はSuicaなどの交通系ICが使える機械が多く、スマホ決済に対応したものも増えています。地方の古い機械は硬貨のみで、高額紙幣が使えないものもあります。

日本自動販売システム機械工業会の統計では、自販機の設置台数は長く500万台を超えていたが、近年は減少して400万台前後で推移している。うち大半は飲料用。世界的に見て人口あたりの台数が非常に多い国のひとつである。温かい飲みものと冷たい飲みものを1台で売る「ホット&コールド」機は1970年代に実用化された。近年は電子マネー対応、災害時に無料で飲料を提供する「災害対応自販機」、売上の一部を寄付する機種なども普及している。なお自販機の横にある回収箱はその飲料メーカーの容器を回収するためのもので、家庭ごみを捨てる場所ではない。
