Hundred-yen shops are one of the most rewarding places for a visitor to spend half an hour. Everything costs one hundred yen plus tax, and the range is enormous: kitchen tools, storage boxes, stationery, craft materials, cleaning products, cosmetics, snacks, gardening supplies.
The thing that surprises people is not that it is cheap. It is that the products are properly designed. There are tools for jobs so specific that you would never think to look for them, and they work. The chains employ real product development teams, and new items appear every month.
For a traveler they are useful for another reason: they are where you buy the small practical things that make a trip easier, and they are the best place in Japan to buy souvenirs that are actually Japanese rather than made for tourists. 100円ショップの原型は、移動販売の「100円均一」の催事で、1970年代から各地の量販店の店頭で行われていた。常設店として全国展開したのは1990年代以降で、ダイソー、セリア、キャンドゥ、ワッツが主要チェーンとされる。ダイソーは海外にも多数出店している。近年は原材料費と物流費の上昇で100円を維持することが難しくなり、300円均一の別業態や、価格帯を広げた商品ラインが増えている。商品の多くは中国をはじめとする海外で生産されるが、企画と設計は日本で行われることが多い。文具や収納用品は、日本の生活様式に合わせて細かく設計されている点が評価されている。
