Wasei-eigo are words that look and sound English but were assembled in Japan.

和製英語は、英語に見えて英語らしく聞こえるのに、日本で組み立てられた語です。

Wasei-eigo means English made in Japan. These words are built from English parts but put together by Japanese speakers, so native speakers do not recognize them. A power outlet is a consento, a laptop is a noto pasokon, and an office worker is a sarariman. They are real Japanese vocabulary rather than mistakes, but they will not work abroad.

和製英語とは、日本で作られた英語風の語のことです。英語の部品を使いながら、組み立てたのは日本語の話し手なので、英語圏の人には通じません。コンセント、ノートパソコン、サラリーマンがその例です。まちがいではなく立派な日本語の語彙ですが、外国では使えません。

One of the strangest traps for a Japanese learner of English is a category of words called wasei-eigo, English made in Japan. They are Japanese words assembled out of English pieces, and there are hundreds of them. A wake-up call is a morning call.

A stroller is a baby car. A petrol station is a gasoline stand. A modern concrete apartment building is a mansion. Some are shortened rather than invented: a personal computer becomes pasokon and air conditioning becomes eakon.

None of this is careless English. It is Japanese vocabulary that happens to be spelled in katakana, and the words work perfectly well inside Japan. The problem is only that we assume they are English, and then use them abroad with complete confidence.

QAre these just mistakes in English?

これは英語のまちがいということですか。

No. They are Japanese words, and inside Japan they are correct. The mistake happens only when a speaker assumes the word will also work in English.

まちがいではありません。日本語の語であり、日本の中では正しい言い方です。誤りになるのは、その語が英語でも通じると思い込んだときだけです。

QWhich ones catch Japanese speakers out most often?

日本人がいちばんひっかかるのはどれですか。

Claim, which in Japanese means a customer complaint; naive, which suggests being sensitive rather than gullible; and smart, which means slim. All three land badly because the English word exists with a different meaning.

クレーム、ナイーブ、スマートです。日本語ではそれぞれ、苦情、繊細、細身を指します。英語にも同じ語があって意味が違うので、そのまま使うと誤解されます。

QDo new ones still appear?

今も新しく生まれているのですか。

Constantly. Advertising and product names produce them faster than dictionaries can record them. A few words travel the other way as well; emoji and karaoke are Japanese words that English has borrowed.

次々に生まれています。広告や商品名が、辞書に載るより速く作り出します。逆向きの流れもあり、絵文字やカラオケは英語に入った日本語です。

誤解されやすい

MYTHJapanese people are using English badly when they say these words.

こうした語を使うのは、日本人が英語を下手に使っているからだ、と思われがちです。

FACTThey are not speaking English at all. These are Japanese words that happen to be written in katakana, and every language builds new words out of borrowed parts.
