There are over fifty thousand of them, and in a small town the konbini may be the only thing open at night.

If you visit Japan, you will end up in a konbini every day. The word is short for convenience store, but that translation undersells it. Yes, you can buy drinks and snacks.
You can also pay your electricity bill, print a document from your phone, send a suitcase to your hotel, buy tickets for a concert, withdraw foreign cash, and use a clean toilet at three in the morning. The food is the part that surprises people most.
Rice balls, fried chicken and egg sandwiches from a konbini are genuinely good, and many Japanese people eat them by choice rather than as a last resort. For a lot of us, the konbini is less a shop than a piece of public infrastructure.
日本に来たら、毎日コンビニに寄ることになると思います。コンビニエンスストアの略ですが、その訳では実態を伝えきれません。飲みものやお菓子はもちろん買えます。
それに加えて、電気代を払い、スマホから書類を印刷し、スーツケースをホテルに送り、コンサートのチケットを買い、外国のカードで現金を下ろし、午前3時にきれいなトイレを使うことができます。

It is safe, and the quality is high, but it is still processed food with a lot of salt. Japanese people who live on konbini meals get told off by their families for exactly that reason.
安全ですし品質も高いですが、加工食品で塩分は多めです。コンビニ食ばかりの人は、まさにその理由で家族から注意されます。

Chains open stores close together on purpose, to block competitors and to keep delivery routes efficient. It looks absurd, and even the industry admits the market is saturated.

日本の1号店は諸説あるが、セブン-イレブンの日本1号店が1974年に東京・豊洲に開店したことはよく知られている。全国の店舗数は5万店を超え、人口あたりの密度は世界でも高い。コンビニが公共料金の収納代行を始めたのは1987年で、ここから「店」以上の役割を担いはじめた。近年は24時間営業の見直しが進み、人手不足を理由に時短営業を認めるチェーンが増えている。また災害時には物流拠点として機能することが想定され、多くの自治体がコンビニ各社と災害時支援協定を結んでいる。「コンビニは社会インフラ」という説明は、比喩ではなく制度上そうなりつつある。
