Christmas in Japan is a secular event. December 25th is a normal working day. The evening of the 24th is treated as a romantic occasion for couples, restaurants are fully booked, and the standard foods are a decorated sponge cake and fried chicken, often ordered from a fast food chain weeks in advance.

Christmas in Japan is worth explaining because almost nothing about it matches the Western version. First, it is not a public holiday. December 25th is an ordinary working day, and offices are busy because the year-end is approaching. Second, it is not a family occasion.

Christmas Eve is a romantic evening for couples, restaurants take bookings months ahead, and being alone on the night is a recognized cultural anxiety that comedians make jokes about. Family time in Japan is New Year, a week later. Third, the food. The standard Christmas meal is a white sponge cake with cream and strawberries, and fried chicken.

The chicken is the result of a marketing campaign by a fast food chain in the 1970s that connected Christmas with its product, and it worked so completely that people now reserve buckets weeks in advance and queue on the day. Under one percent of the population is Christian, and essentially none of this is religious.

QWhy fried chicken?

A fast food chain ran a Christmas campaign in Japan in the 1970s, and it succeeded to an extent that has become a standard case study. Turkey was never available here, and the association stuck.

QSo what do families do?

Small children get presents from Santa and there is a cake, so young families do mark it. But the large family gathering, the travel home and the days off all belong to New Year here.

QAre the decorations religious?

Almost never. Illuminations, trees and Santa are everywhere from November, but nativity scenes are rare outside churches and Christian schools.

MYTHChristmas in Japan is a smaller version of the Western Christmas.

FACTIt is a different event: a secular, commercial, romantic evening, not a public holiday and not a family gathering. The family holiday here is New Year.
