A konbini is a 24-hour store where you can also pay bills, print documents and buy decent food.
Convenience stores exist everywhere, but the Japanese version does far more. You can pay your electricity bill, print a document, send a parcel, buy concert tickets, withdraw cash and pick up fresh food that is genuinely good. There are over fifty thousand of them, and in a small town the konbini may be the only thing open at night.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
If you visit Japan, you will end up in a konbini every day. The word is short for convenience store, but that translation undersells it. Yes, you can buy drinks and snacks.
You can also pay your electricity bill, print a document from your phone, send a suitcase to your hotel, buy tickets for a concert, withdraw cash with a foreign card, and use a clean toilet at three in the morning. The food is the part that surprises people most.
Rice balls, fried chicken and egg sandwiches from a konbini are genuinely good, and many Japanese people eat them by choice rather than as a last resort. For a lot of us, the konbini is less a shop than a piece of public infrastructure.
In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QIs convenience store food really safe to eat every day?
AIt is safe, and the quality is high, but it is still processed food with a lot of salt. Japanese people who live on konbini meals often get scolded by their families for exactly that reason.
QWhy are there two konbini on the same corner?
AChains open stores close together on purpose, to block competitors and to keep delivery routes efficient. It looks absurd, and even the industry admits the market is saturated.
QCan I use a foreign card in the ATM?
AUsually yes. The ATMs at Seven-Eleven and Japan Post accept most overseas cards, which is why travelers use them constantly.
A common misunderstanding
MYTHConvenience store food in Japan is cheap junk, like anywhere else.
FACTIt is made to high standards and changes with the seasons. New products appear every week, and food magazines review them seriously.

Background
