Tipping is not part of Japanese service. Restaurants, taxis, hairdressers and hotels expect the listed price only, and money left on a table is usually returned to you. Good service is treated as the standard, not as something bought separately. A small envelope at a traditional inn is the one recognized exception.

There is no tipping in Japan, and this confuses visitors more than almost anything else. You pay the amount on the bill, and that is the end of it. Leave coins on a restaurant table and a member of staff will very likely run after you into the street to return them, because to them you have forgotten your change.
Taxi drivers give exact change. Hotel staff who carry your bags will decline money. The reason usually given is that good service is considered part of the job rather than an extra to be purchased, and prices are set with that included.
There is one accepted exception: a guest at a traditional inn may give a small sum to the person looking after their room, folded in an envelope and handed over quietly at the start of the stay. Outside that, if you want to express thanks, say it clearly, or write a comment naming the person. That is valued and it costs nothing.
日本にチップはありません。これは、ほかのどんなことよりも訪日客を戸惑わせます。請求された額を払えば、それで終わりです。飲食店のテーブルに小銭を置いていけば、店員が通りまで追いかけて返しにくるでしょう。その人にとって、あなたはお釣りを忘れたのですから。
タクシーの運転手はきっちりお釣りを渡します。荷物を運んだホテルの人はお金を断ります。よく挙げられる理由は、よい接客は追加で買うものではなく仕事の一部と考えられており、値段にもそれが含まれているということです。認められた例外が一つあります。

Say so, by name if you can, and tell the manager or write it in a review. Staff are evaluated on that. Offering cash usually puts the person in an awkward position, because accepting it may be against the rules.

That is a percentage added by the property, not a tip, and it goes to the business. It is disclosed in advance, so there is nothing further to add at checkout.

Put a small amount in a plain envelope, hand it to the person attending your room soon after you arrive, and say thank you for looking after us. Bare cash handed over directly is what feels wrong here.

誤解されやすい

FACTWages are set to be the whole of the pay rather than a base topped up by customers, and menu prices reflect that. Low pay exists in some industries, but it is not caused by the absence of tips.
賃金は、客が上乗せする前提の基本給ではなく、それ自体で完結するものとして決められており、値段にも反映されています。賃金の低い業種はありますが、それはチップがないせいではありません。
