The Shibuya scramble crossing is one of those places that is famous for being ordinary. All the traffic lights turn red together, and pedestrians pour across in every direction including diagonally. At peak times, a few thousand people cross in a single signal change. There is nothing to see there in the usual sense: no monument, no ticket, no history.
What people come for is the choreography. Everyone is walking at a normal speed, nobody is looking up, and somehow no one collides. Foreign visitors film it because in most cities that many people converging would mean stopping and apologizing constantly. Two honest notes. First, this is somebody's commute.
Standing in the middle to film blocks people who are trying to get to work, and Shibuya ward has had to put up signs about it. Film from the second floor of the station building or a cafe overlooking it. Second, the famous dog statue, Hachiko, is right beside it, and it is much smaller than people expect and surrounded by a crowd waiting for friends.
渋谷のスクランブル交差点は、ふつうであることで有名になった場所です。信号がいっせいに赤になり、歩行者が斜めも含めて全方向にあふれ出します。混む時間帯には、一度の信号で数千人が渡ります。ふつうの意味で見るものは何もありません。記念物も入場券も歴史もない。

People keep a steady pace and adjust early rather than stopping, and there is a general habit of moving to the left. It is less about politeness than about everyone predicting everyone else, which works only if nobody stops suddenly.
みな速度を保ち、止まるのではなく早めに避けます。左に寄る習慣もあります。礼儀というより、全員が互いの動きを読んでいるからで、誰かが急に止まると崩れます。

From above. The station building's upper floors, the pedestrian deck, or a cafe with a window over the crossing. Standing in the middle is the one thing to avoid.

全方向の歩行者が同時に渡る方式は、日本では「スクランブル交差点」と呼ばれ、渋谷駅前のものが世界的に知られる。この方式自体は日本独自のものではなく、海外ではバーナード・ベリー式交差点などとも呼ばれる。渋谷の交差点が映像で広く知られるようになったのは、海外の映画やドラマで繰り返し使われたことが大きい。近年は撮影のために立ち止まる人が増え、渋谷区は年末のカウントダウンなどで通行の規制を行っている。すぐそばのハチ公像は1934年に建てられたが、戦時中の金属供出で失われ、現在のものは1948年に再建されたものである。
