Ginza is the expensive shopping district of Tokyo, and the name is worth explaining because it is not decorative. Gin means silver and za means a guild or office, and in 1612 the shogunate moved its silver coinage office to this spot.
The office itself left in 1800, but the nickname stuck to the neighborhood, and it stuck so well that towns all over Japan later named their own main shopping street something-Ginza, meaning our little downtown.
After a fire in 1872 the area was rebuilt in brick as a showcase of Western style, and it has been where Tokyo displays what is new ever since. On Sunday afternoons the central avenue is closed to traffic, which began in 1970, and the change in the feel of the street is remarkable. Prices are high, but walking and looking costs nothing.
銀座は東京の高級商業地ですが、この地名は飾りではないので説明する価値があります。「銀」は silver、「座」は同業の組合や役所を指し、1612年に幕府が銀貨を作る役所をここへ移しました。
役所自体は1800年に去りましたが、通称だけが町に残りました。しかもよく残ったので、のちに全国の町が自分たちの商店街を「◯◯銀座」と呼ぶようになります。「うちの繁華街」という意味です。
1872年の火事のあと、この一帯は西洋風の見本としてれんがで建て直され、以来、東京が新しいものを見せる場所であり続けています。日曜の午後は中央通りから車を締め出します。1970年に始まった歩行者天国で、通りの空気ががらりと変わります。値段は高いですが、歩いて眺めるのはただです。

慶長17年（1612年）、幕府は駿府にあった銀貨鋳造の役所をいまの銀座二丁目あたりに移した。当時の正式な町名は新両替町で、「銀座」は通称だった。役所は寛政12年（1800年）に日本橋蛎殻町へ移されたが、通称のほうが残り、明治になって正式な町名になった。明治5年（1872年）の大火のあと、銀座通りは煉瓦造の街並みに改められた。歩行者天国は昭和45年（1970年）8月2日に始まり、初日は23万人が訪れたとされる。
