Tokyo Skytree opened in May 2012 and is 634 meters tall, which at the time made it the world's tallest free-standing broadcasting tower. The reason it exists is practical rather than symbolic. Tokyo Tower, built in 1958, had become too short: the city had grown so many high-rise buildings that digital television signals were being blocked, so a much taller transmitter was needed.
The height is a joke that Japanese people enjoy explaining. Six-three-four can be read mu-sa-shi, and Musashi is the old provincial name for the area that includes Tokyo. There are two decks, at 350 and 450 meters, and on a clear winter morning you can see Mount Fuji from the top.
Two honest notes for visitors. It is expensive compared with most Tokyo sights, and the view is better in winter when the air is clear. Also, the older Tokyo Tower is still standing and still worth seeing; people often assume it was demolished.

スカイツリーと東京タワー、どちらがいいですか。
Skytree is higher and newer; Tokyo Tower is shorter, older, closer to the center and, for many Japanese people, more sentimental. If you want the view, go up Skytree. If you want the image of postwar Tokyo, look at Tokyo Tower from the street.
