Odaiba sits on reclaimed land in Tokyo Bay, reached by a driverless train over a long bridge. It has shopping centers, museums, a beach you can walk on but not swim from, and a view of the city across the water. The name comes from gun batteries, daiba, built in 1853 to defend against foreign warships.

Odaiba is the waterfront part of Tokyo, and it is entirely artificial. The name is worth explaining. In 1853 American warships arrived demanding that Japan open its ports, and the shogunate hurriedly built gun batteries on artificial islands in the bay to defend the city. A battery is daiba, and the polite prefix makes it odaiba.

They were never fired in anger. Two of them still exist as parkland. The modern district was developed from the late 1980s as a new business center, a plan that collapsed with the economy, so what filled the space instead was shopping, television studios, museums and leisure.

It is a good place to take children, and the evening view back across the water at the bridge and the city is the reason most people go.

QCan you swim at the beach?

Not normally. The water quality in the inner bay has not allowed general swimming, though the city has run limited supervised swimming events in recent years. Walking, paddling and sitting are what people do.

QWhat is the driverless train?

The Yurikamome, an automated line on rubber tires that curves over the bay. Sit at the very front, where the driver's cab would be, for the best view on the way in.

QWhy is there a Statue of Liberty?

A replica was brought from France for a Japan-France event in 1998, was popular, and a copy was put up permanently afterward. It has no deeper meaning, and Japanese people find the question funny.
