If you are in Tokyo for a few days, the Yamanote line is the one to understand. It is a loop, about thirty-five kilometers around, with thirty stations, and it strings together nearly every district you have heard of.
Trains are light green, arrive every two to four minutes, and run from around five in the morning until about one at night. Because it is a loop, there is no wrong direction, only a slower one, and if you miss your stop you will come back to it in an hour.
Inside, doors have screens showing the next stations in English, and the announcements are bilingual. One practical thing: the two tracks run opposite ways around the same platforms, so check whether the sign says the direction goes via Shinjuku or via Tokyo. That tells you which half of the circle you are about to take.
東京に数日いるなら、まず分かっておくべきは山手線です。一周およそ35キロの環状線で、駅は30。名前を聞いたことのある街を、ほぼ全部つないでいます。車両は黄緑で、2〜4分おきに来て、朝5時ごろから深夜1時ごろまで走ります。
環状なので、間違った方向というものはなく、遅い方向があるだけです。乗り過ごしても、1時間後にはまた同じ駅に戻ってきます。車内の扉の上の画面には次の駅が英語でも出ますし、放送も二か国語です。
一つだけ実用的なことを。二つの線路は同じホームの両側を逆向きに回るので、表示が「新宿方面」か「東京方面」かを見てください。これで、円のどちら半分を行くかが分かります。

Yes, the trains run continuously around the loop in both directions. Strictly, the official Yamanote line is only part of the circle and the rest is shared with other lines, but for a passenger it is one ring.

QWhich direction should I take?
どちら回りに乗ればいいですか。
Look at the station name on the sign rather than the words inner or outer. If the next major station listed is where you want to go, that is your train. Going the wrong way costs time, not money.
「内回り・外回り」より、表示されている駅名を見てください。行きたい方面の大きな駅が並んでいれば、それが乗るべき電車です。逆に乗っても、損をするのは時間だけです。
QWhy is it so crowded in the morning?
どうして朝はあんなに混むのですか。
It passes through every major office district, so the peak between eight and nine is genuinely packed. If you can travel before seven thirty or after ten, the same trip is a different experience.

山手線は一周約34.5キロ、駅数は30で、2020年に高輪ゲートウェイ駅が開業して29から30になった。一周の所要時間はおよそ1時間。車体の黄緑色は「うぐいす色」と呼ばれ、1963年に登場した101系電車から使われている。線路の呼び方は「内回り」「外回り」で、内回りは反時計回り、外回りは時計回りにあたる。正式な路線としての山手線は品川から新宿を経て田端までで、残りの区間は東北本線と東海道本線の線路を走っている。
