Tokyo Tower was completed at the end of 1958, thirteen years after the war, when Japan had several television stations and no single tower tall enough to serve them all. It is 333 meters, deliberately taller than the Eiffel Tower, and people often assume it is a copy.
The shape is similar because both are steel lattice towers, but Tokyo Tower is taller and weighs less than half as much, because steel and welding had improved in the seventy years between them, and because it had to stand through earthquakes and typhoons. Broadcasting moved to Skytree in 2012.
What remains is the view and the meaning. Older Japanese people talk about it the way Americans talk about the moon landing: proof that the country was going to be all right. I like it best from a side street in the evening, when it appears above the buildings unexpectedly.
東京タワーは戦争から13年後の1958年末に完成しました。当時の日本にはテレビ局がいくつもあり、その全部をまかなえる高い塔がなかったからです。高さは333メートルで、エッフェル塔より高くなるよう意図されました。
まねだと思われがちですが、形が似ているのはどちらも鉄骨を三角に組んだ塔だからで、東京タワーのほうが高く、重さは半分以下です。70年のあいだに鉄と溶接の技術が進んだこと、そして地震と台風に耐える必要があったことが理由です。
放送は2012年にスカイツリーへ移りました。残っているのは眺めと意味です。年上の日本人は、この塔を「この国は大丈夫だ」という証しとして語ります。私は夕方、横道からふいに見上げる東京タワーがいちばん好きです。

It was clearly inspired by it, and the designer never hid that. But it is nine meters taller and weighs less than half as much, because it was built seventy years later with better steel, and it had to survive earthquakes.
明らかに影響を受けていますし、設計者もそれを隠していません。ただし9メートル高く、重さは半分以下です。70年あとに、より良い鋼で建てられ、地震に耐える必要があったからです。

どうしてオレンジと白に塗られているのですか。
Aviation rules at the time required tall structures to be painted in alternating bands so pilots could see them. The color is officially international orange, not red.
当時の航空法で、高い建造物はパイロットから見えるよう縞に塗ることが求められていました。色は正式には赤ではなく、インターナショナルオレンジです。
QIs it worth going up now that Skytree exists?
スカイツリーがあるいま、登る価値はありますか。
They give you different things. Skytree is twice as high and you look down on a grid of lights. Tokyo Tower is low enough that you can still see individual streets and rooftops, which many people find more interesting.
得られるものが違います。スカイツリーは倍の高さで、光の格子を見下ろす感じです。東京タワーは低いぶん、通りや屋上が一つずつ見えます。そちらが面白いという人は多いです。

正式名称は「日本電波塔」で、東京タワーは通称である。設計は早稲田大学教授の内藤多仲らによる。内藤は「塔博士」と呼ばれ、名古屋テレビ塔や通天閣の二代目も手がけた。高さ333メートルという数字は、当時の電波の到達範囲から必要とされた高さに合わせて決まったもので、語呂合わせではない。建設には延べ20万人以上が関わり、着工から完成までおよそ1年半だった。塗り替えはおよそ5年に一度、足場を組まずに職人が手で塗る。
