Tokyo Skytree opened in May 2012 and is 634 meters tall, which at the time made it the world's tallest free-standing broadcasting tower. The reason it exists is practical rather than symbolic. Tokyo Tower, built in 1958, had become too short: the city had grown so many high-rise buildings that digital television signals were being blocked, so a much taller transmitter was needed.
