The standard explanation

Kinkakuji, the Golden Pavilion, is a three-story building beside a pond in northern Kyoto. Its formal name is Rokuonji. It was built as a retirement villa for a shogun in the fourteenth century and became a temple after his death. The building you photograph today is not the original: a monk set fire to it in 1950 and it was rebuilt in 1955. Gold leaf covers only the upper two stories.

As a short speech

A full paragraph you can read aloud

Kinkakuji in Kyoto is probably the single most photographed building in Japan. Its formal name is Rokuonji, and it was built in the late fourteenth century as a retirement villa for the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, becoming a Zen temple after he died. Three things are worth knowing before you describe it. First, the building is not medieval.

A young monk of the temple burned it down in 1950, and what stands now was completed in 1955; the gold leaf was renewed in a major restoration in the late 1980s. Second, the gold is only on the upper two stories. The ground floor is left as plain wood, in an older aristocratic style, and each of the three levels uses a different architectural style deliberately.

Third, you cannot go inside. Visitors walk a fixed one-way path around the pond, which is why every photograph you have seen is from almost the same angle. It was listed as a World Heritage site in 1994 as part of the monuments of ancient Kyoto.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

QIs it actually made of gold?

It is wood covered in gold leaf, on the upper two floors only. The leaf is extremely thin and has been renewed, most notably in a major restoration in the late 1980s.

QWhy did a monk burn it down?

A young monk of the temple set the fire in 1950 and the motive has been debated ever since. The incident inspired Yukio Mishima's novel The Temple of the Golden Pavilion, which is how many people outside Japan know the story.

QCan you go inside?

No. The route is a one-way path through the garden, and the pavilion is viewed from across the pond. Plan for a short visit; most people are done in under an hour.

A common misunderstanding

MYTHThe Golden Pavilion has stood since the fourteenth century.

FACTIt was burned down by a monk in 1950 and rebuilt in 1955. The site and the design are old; the building itself is postwar.
