Akihabara is famous abroad as the anime district, and that is true now but it is only the latest layer. After the war, stalls selling radio parts gathered around the station, partly under the railway arches, and the area became the place you went to build or repair a radio. Then it sold home appliances, in the decades when a washing machine was a major purchase.
Then it sold personal computers and parts. From the 1990s, as that business moved online, the buildings filled with anime, manga, games, figures and maid cafes. What is interesting is that the earlier layers did not disappear. Walk one street back from the main road and you will find a warren of tiny stalls selling switches, capacitors and connectors to engineers, exactly as they did sixty years ago.
If you are shopping, two practical notes: electronics here are not especially cheap by international standards any more, and secondhand anime goods are often a better buy than new. And it is a working district, so the same rules as anywhere apply about photographing people.

秋葉原の電気街は、戦後に神田周辺で電気部品を扱った露店が、道路整備にともなって駅周辺の高架下などに集められたことに始まるとされる。1950年代から70年代にかけては家電、80年代から90年代にかけてはパソコンと部品が中心となり、2000年代以降はアニメ・ゲーム関連の店が増えた。ラジオ会館やラジオセンターといった名称は、ラジオ部品を扱っていた時代の名残である。なお地名の由来は、明治初期にこの地にあった鎮火社が秋葉大権現を祀ると誤解され「秋葉っ原」と呼ばれたことによるという説がある。
