The standard explanation

The Great Buddha of Kamakura sits in the open air at Kotokuin temple, about an hour from Tokyo. It is bronze, 11.31 meters tall seated, and casting began in 1252. It was originally housed in a hall. The hall was destroyed, by storms and a tsunami, and was never rebuilt, so the statue has sat outdoors for around five hundred years. You can go inside it.

As a short speech

A full paragraph you can read aloud

The Great Buddha of Kamakura sits outdoors, and almost everyone assumes it was designed that way. It was not. Casting began in 1252, and the statue originally stood inside a hall. That hall was destroyed, and after a storm and tsunami at the end of the fifteenth century it was not rebuilt, so the figure has sat under the sky ever since.

It is bronze, 11.31 meters seated, about 13 meters with the base, and weighs somewhere around 120 tons. It is smaller than the Nara Great Buddha, but many people find it the more affecting of the two, partly because there is nothing between it and the weather.

An unusual thing you can do here: for a very small fee you can walk inside the statue and see the casting seams from within, which tells you it was made in sections and joined. It is also worth saying that this is a working temple of the Pure Land school, not a monument. People come to pray, and the crowd outside taking photographs is a separate activity happening at the same spot.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

QWhy is it outside when the Nara one is in a hall?

It used to be in a hall too. The building was lost, and the records point to a storm and tsunami at the end of the fifteenth century as the last blow. It was never rebuilt, and the statue has been in the open since.

QYou can really go inside it?

Yes, through a small entrance at the side, for a separate small fee. Inside you see the interior surface and the joins from the casting. The space is low and hot in summer, and it is closed at times.

QWhich is better, Nara or Kamakura?

Nara's is larger and inside an enormous hall; Kamakura's is smaller, outdoors and easier to reach from Tokyo. If you are only in the Tokyo area, Kamakura is the practical answer and is a good day out with the coast and the temples nearby.
