The standard explanation
Todaiji was built in the eighth century on the order of Emperor Shomu, and the eye-opening ceremony for its Great Buddha was held in 752. The seated bronze figure is about fifteen meters high. It sits in the Great Buddha Hall, one of the largest wooden buildings in the world. The hall burned down twice in wars; the present one was completed in 1709 and is about two-thirds the width of the original.

A full paragraph you can read aloud
Todaiji in Nara holds the Great Buddha, a seated bronze figure about fifteen meters high, cast in the eighth century. Emperor Shomu ordered it during a period of epidemic and unrest, and the eye-opening ceremony, in which the pupils were painted in to bring the statue to life, was held in 752.
Two things are usually left out when people describe it. First, the hall is not the original. It was burned in warfare twice, and the building you walk into was completed in 1709, at roughly two-thirds the width of the eighth-century hall. It is still among the largest wooden buildings in the world, which tells you how big the first one was.
Second, the statue itself has been repaired repeatedly; the head dates from a later period than the body. There is also a pillar at the back with a hole cut through it, said to be the size of the Buddha's nostril, and children climb through it for luck. Watching a queue of adults consider whether they will fit is part of the visit.
Questions people actually ask
And how to answer them.
QIs this the biggest Buddha statue in Japan?
It is the most famous, but not the tallest. Several modern statues are far larger. Among premodern bronze Buddhas it is the great one, and the Kamakura Daibutsu is the other well-known example, smaller and outdoors.
QWhy was it built?
Emperor Shomu ordered it after years of epidemic, famine and rebellion, as an act intended to protect the state through Buddhism. It was also an enormous display of central power, and the cost is said to have strained the country.
QCan you take photos inside?
Yes, inside the Great Buddha Hall photography is generally allowed, which is not true of every temple. Do not use a flash, and stay out of the way of people praying.
