The standard explanation
Asakusa is the district around Sensoji, said to be the oldest temple in Tokyo. You enter through a huge gate with a red lantern, walk a shopping street of snack and souvenir stalls called Nakamise, and reach the main hall. It is the most visited temple in the country. Much of what you see was rebuilt after the 1945 air raids, so the buildings are newer than the street plan.
As a short speech
A full paragraph you can read aloud
Asakusa is where most first-time visitors to Tokyo go, and it is worth explaining properly rather than just calling it old Tokyo. At its center is Sensoji, a temple whose founding legend dates it to 628, when two fishermen are said to have pulled a statue of Kannon from the Sumida River. It is the oldest temple in Tokyo and the most visited in Japan.
You approach through the Kaminarimon gate with its enormous red lantern, then Nakamise, a street of stalls that has been selling snacks and souvenirs for centuries. Here is the honest part. Tokyo was firebombed in 1945 and Asakusa was destroyed, so the main hall and the gate you photograph are postwar reconstructions in concrete.
What survived is the shape of the place: the same approach, the same trades, the same festival. And there is a second Asakusa behind the main street, of small bars, old shops and craftsmen, which is where the atmosphere people came looking for actually is.
Questions people actually ask
And how to answer them.
QIs it a temple or a shrine?
Sensoji is a Buddhist temple. Asakusa Shrine, a Shinto shrine, stands right next to it, which is a normal arrangement in Japan and often confuses visitors. The famous Sanja Festival in May belongs to the shrine, not the temple.
QWhat's the correct way to behave there?
Bow once at the gate, wash your hands at the basin, and if you burn incense, waft the smoke toward yourself. At the main hall you throw a coin, bow, and put your palms together. You do not clap at a temple; clapping is for shrines.
QIs it too touristy to be worth it?
The main street is very crowded, especially midday. Go early in the morning or after dark when the buildings are lit and the stalls are shuttered, and walk one street back from Nakamise. It becomes a different place.
A common misunderstanding
MYTHAsakusa's temple buildings are centuries-old survivals of pre-modern Tokyo.
FACTThe area was destroyed in the 1945 firebombing. The main hall and the Kaminarimon were rebuilt after the war in concrete. The continuity is in the street pattern and the trades, not the structures.
