The Takarazuka Revue is an all-female musical theater company, founded in Hyogo Prefecture in the 1910s, with its first performance in 1914. Every role is played by a woman, and the company is organized around a distinction between otokoyaku, who specialize in male roles, and musumeyaku, who play the female ones.
The male-role performers are the stars: they have short hair, deep speaking voices, and fans who follow them for decades. Productions are large, expensive and unapologetically romantic, mixing adapted novels and manga with a feathered revue finale.
Performers enter through a highly competitive attached school with two years of training and strict rules about conduct, and they retire from the company rather than aging into other roles. It is sometimes compared to kabuki in reverse, where men play all the roles, though the two developed quite separately. The audience is overwhelmingly women, across all ages.
宝塚歌劇団は全員が女性の音楽劇団で、1910年代に兵庫県で創設され、最初の公演は1914年に行われました。どの役も女性が演じ、劇団は男性の役を専門とする男役と、女性の役を演じる娘役の区別を軸に組み立てられています。

演者は競争率の高い付属の学校に入って二年の訓練を受け、生活にも厳しい決まりがあります。年を重ねて別の役に移るのではなく、劇団を退団する形をとります。男性が全役を演じる歌舞伎の逆だと言われることがありますが、二つはかなり別々に発展してきました。観客は年代を問わず、圧倒的に女性です。
