Manga are Japanese comics, read right to left, and they are a mainstream part of publishing rather than a niche.

Manga are read from right to left, back cover to front by Western convention. Most are serialized weekly or monthly in thick magazines, often printed on cheap paper, and successful series are collected into volumes. The readership spans all ages, and categories are defined by target audience rather than subject: boys, girls, young men, women, and children.

Manga are Japanese comics, and the first practical thing to know is that you read them from right to left. The book opens from what a Western reader would call the back, and within a page you start at the top right panel. Publishers now print a note on the last page telling foreign readers they have opened it the wrong way.
The system behind manga is worth understanding. Most series run first as weekly or monthly chapters in a thick, cheap magazine carrying twenty or so different series, and readers vote on which ones they like. Series that do badly get canceled quickly, and series that do well are collected into books, which is where the money is.
Categories are defined by intended audience rather than subject: shonen for boys, shojo for girls, seinen for young men, josei for women. Someone reading manga on a train here is as unremarkable as someone reading a novel.
QWhy right to left?
Because Japanese was traditionally written in vertical columns running right to left, and manga inherited that layout. Translated editions used to be flipped, which reversed the art, and most publishers stopped doing that.
QWhy is so much of it in black and white?
Weekly serialization at that volume makes color impractical, both in time and cost. Artists work with screentone and hatching instead, and the constraint shaped the visual style.
QWhat is a manga café?
A shop where you pay by the hour for a booth, unlimited drinks and access to thousands of volumes. Many are open all night and some people use them as cheap accommodation.
