A Japanese net cafe is not really a cafe. It is a floor divided into small private booths, each with a computer, a reclining chair or a flat mat, and a door or curtain. The price is by the hour, free soft drinks come with it, and the walls are lined with manga, often tens of thousands of volumes.
Most branches have showers, some have laundry machines, and an overnight package from around midnight to early morning is common, which makes them the standard fallback when you miss the last train. You register once with photo identification, and after that you check in at a counter or a machine.
There is a harder side that Japanese people know about: the low overnight rate means some people without stable housing live in them, and surveys by Tokyo have looked at how many. Mentioning that is not a reason to avoid them, but it is part of an honest description.
