Karaoke was invented in Japan, and the Japanese version is usually a private room. You book a room by the hour, order drinks by phone or tablet, and sing only in front of the people you came with. The word combines kara, empty, and oke, a shortening of orchestra, so it means empty orchestra: the band is missing and you fill the gap.

カラオケは日本で生まれました。日本では個室が基本です。時間で部屋を借り、電話やタブレットで飲み物を頼み、一緒に来た人の前でだけ歌います。語は「空(から)」と、オーケストラを縮めた「オケ」を合わせたもので、空っぽの楽団という意味です。楽団がいない、その穴を自分で埋めるのです。

Karaoke was invented in Japan in the early 1970s, and the Japanese form of it is different from what many people abroad picture. Here it is almost always a private room. You go to a building full of small rooms, book one by the hour, and sing only in front of the friends or colleagues you came with.

You order drinks through a phone on the wall, and staff bring them to the door. This changes everything about the experience: people who would never sing in a bar will sing here, because there is no audience of strangers.

The word is a compound of kara, meaning empty, and oke, a clipping of the English word orchestra. Empty orchestra. Karaoke after work with colleagues is a real part of Japanese working life, and the etiquette is simple: put in songs other people can enjoy, applaud everyone, and never sing three in a row.

QDo I have to sing?

歌わなければいけませんか。

No, and nobody will force you, though someone will probably encourage you once. Sitting with a drink and applauding is a completely acceptable way to spend the whole session.

歌わなくて構いませんし、無理強いはされません。一度はすすめられるかもしれませんが。飲みながら拍手しているだけでも、まったく問題のない過ごし方です。

QAre there English songs?

英語の曲はありますか。

Thousands. The machines carry large international catalogues, and you can search by title or artist in English on the tablet.

何千曲もあります。機械には海外曲が大量に入っており、タブレットで英語のまま曲名や歌手名で検索できます。

QIs it expensive?

高いですか。

Usually not. Daytime rates are very cheap, often a few hundred yen an hour per person, and many places offer free drink refills. Late night rates are higher.
