ABecause Japanese was traditionally written in vertical columns running right to left, and manga inherited that layout. Translated editions used to be flipped, which reversed the art, and most publishers stopped doing that.
どうして右から左へ読むのですか。日本語が縦書きで右から左へ進む書き方だったため、漫画もその配置を受け継ぎました。以前は翻訳版で左右を反転させていましたが、絵まで反転してしまうため、多くの出版社がやめました。

豆知識Background
現代の漫画の出発点として手塚治虫がしばしば挙げられるが、戯画や絵巻物の系譜、江戸時代の草双紙、明治期の風刺漫画など複数の源流がある。「漫画」の語を広めたのは北斎の『北斎漫画』（1814年）とされるが、意味は今と異なり、気の向くままに描いた絵という意味だった。週刊少年ジャンプは1968年創刊で、最盛期の1995年には653万部を記録した。読者アンケートによる人気順が連載の継続に直結する仕組みは、少年誌の特徴として知られる。出版科学研究所の統計では、電子を含む漫画市場は紙の書籍市場全体のなかで大きな比重を占め、近年は電子が紙を上回っている。
