Koyasan is a basin at about 800 meters, opened as a monastic center by the monk Kukai in 816 and now holding over a hundred temples. More than fifty of them take overnight guests, serving vegetarian temple food and letting you attend the morning service. Behind the town runs Okunoin, a two-kilometer cemetery path of over 200,000 graves under old cedars, ending at Kukai's mausoleum.

Koyasan is the easiest place in Japan to actually experience Buddhism rather than look at it. It is a flat basin at about 800 meters in the mountains south of Osaka, opened in 816 by the monk Kukai as a training center for the Shingon school, and it is still a working monastic town of more than a hundred temples.
Over fifty of them run shukubo, temple lodgings: you get a tatami room, a vegetarian dinner of the kind monks eat, and you are welcome at the six or seven o'clock morning service. Nobody asks what you believe.
The other half of the visit is Okunoin, a cemetery path about two kilometers long running under cedars that are centuries old, with more than 200,000 graves along it, including those of famous warlords who fought each other in life. At the end is the mausoleum of Kukai, who by the doctrine of this school is not dead but in eternal meditation, and monks still carry him meals twice a day.
QCan anyone stay at a temple?
Yes. Temple lodgings take bookings from anyone, including non-Buddhists and foreign visitors, and many have English information. You are a guest, not a trainee.
QDo I have to join the morning service?
It is optional, but it is the reason most people stay. It usually runs about forty minutes, starting around six, and you simply sit.
QIs the food really all vegetarian?
Yes — no meat, no fish, and traditionally no onion or garlic either. Tell them in advance about allergies; the dashi is usually kelp-based here.
