Shukubo is a place to stay inside a Buddhist temple. Long ago, these rooms were for monks and pilgrims, but today many temples welcome ordinary travelers, too. You sleep on a futon in a tatami room, eat shojin ryori, or Buddhist vegetarian food, and can join the monks' morning service. Koyasan in Wakayama, with about 50 temple lodgings, is the best-known place to try it.

Shukubo means temple lodging. Originally, temples had rooms for monks and for pilgrims who came from far away to pray. Today, many of them also take in ordinary travelers, including visitors from overseas. A stay is simple.

You sleep on a futon in a tatami room, and dinner is shojin ryori, a vegetarian meal with no meat or fish, made from tofu, vegetables, and other plant foods. For many guests, the highlight comes early the next morning, when you can sit in the main hall while the monks chant sutras. Some temples also let you try copying sutras or sitting in meditation.

The most famous place for this is Koyasan in Wakayama Prefecture, a town on a mountain with about 50 temples that offer lodging. It isn't a hotel, though. Dinner may be early, the bath may close at a set time, and the rooms can be cold in winter. Still, waking up to the sound of chanting is something I'll never forget.

Q

Do I have to be Buddhist to stay at a shukubo?

No. Most temple lodgings welcome guests of any faith. Joining the morning service is usually up to you, but you should be quiet and respectful in the halls.

Q

Is it like staying at a hotel?

Not really. The rooms are simple, meal and bath times are often fixed, and some places have shared toilets. It's closer to a traditional inn with temple rules.

Q

Why is the food all vegetarian?

Buddhism teaches people not to take life, so monks traditionally eat shojin ryori, which uses no meat or fish. Guests eat the same kind of meal as part of the experience.

MYTHTemple lodging is only for monks or serious believers.

FACTMany temples welcome ordinary travelers, and you don't need to be Buddhist. You just need to follow the temple's rules.
