An izakaya serves drinks and a long menu of small dishes meant to be shared. You order a few things at a time, keep ordering through the evening, and everything arrives as it is ready rather than in courses. It is the default place for after-work drinks, and a small charge appears on the bill for a compulsory appetizer.

An izakaya is often translated as a Japanese pub, but the emphasis is different. In a British or American pub the drink is the point and food is secondary. In an izakaya the food is the point, and it arrives all evening. You do not order a main course.

You order four or five small dishes for the table, and when those are gone you order more, and this continues until someone suggests going home. Everything is shared, and you get a small plate to take from the communal ones. Two things confuse visitors.

First, a small dish you did not order will arrive at the start; this is otoshi, a compulsory appetizer that works as a seating charge, and it appears on the bill. Second, everyone usually orders the same first drink so the toast can happen together, and nobody drinks before the toast.

QWhat is the small dish I didn't order?

Otoshi, or tsukidashi in the west. It is a compulsory appetizer that functions as a cover charge, typically a few hundred yen per person. You cannot usually decline it.

QHow do I order?

A few dishes at a time, for everyone to share. Ordering everything at once means it all arrives together and goes cold. Press the call button or say sumimasen when you want more.

QCan I go alone?

Yes, and many people do, especially at the counter. Solo drinking after work is completely normal and nobody will find it odd.
