head shrines and their thousands of branch shrines

Thousands of Japanese shrines share one name because a kami can be divided, not copied, into new shrines.

Walk around Japan and you will meet the same shrine names again and again — Hachiman, Inari, Tenjin, Suwa — because Shinto has a practice called kanjo, dividing a kami's spirit and enshrining it at a new location without reducing what remains at the original. The original becomes the sohonsha, or head shrine; the new ones are bunsha, branch shrines. Usa Jingu in Oita is said to be head shrine to tens of thousands of Hachiman shrines nationwide.

One thing that puzzles visitors is why the same shrine name turns up in nearly every town — an Inari shrine behind a shopping street, a Hachiman shrine by the station, a Tenjin shrine near a school. This is not coincidence or copying. Shinto has a practice called kanjo: a kami's spirit is formally invited and divided into a new shrine, and the division is not understood as splitting a fixed quantity, so the original site loses nothing by it.
The head shrine is called the sohonsha; everything descended from it is a bunsha, a branch shrine. Usa Jingu in Oita, said to be head shrine to tens of thousands of Hachiman shrines, and Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto, head of the Inari network, are the two best-known examples.
QSo are all these Inari or Hachiman shrines actually connected?
In the sense of belonging to the same network and tracing back to one head shrine, yes, though each branch shrine is independently run and often has its own local history layered on top. It is less like a franchise and more like a family tree.
QWhy are there so many Inari shrines specifically?
Inari began as a kami of rice and harvests and later became associated with business success, so merchants and companies have long requested branch shrines on their own land — including small ones still kept on office roofs today.
QDoes dividing a kami like this mean the original loses power?
No — that is precisely the point of kanjo. The relationship is explained as one kami present in many places at once, closer to a flame lighting other candles than to cutting up a fixed object.
