Seiyu means voice actor. In many countries voice work is a side job for screen actors, but in Japan it is a separate profession with its own training schools, agencies and fan base. Seiyu record anime, dub foreign films, narrate documentaries, and voice games and station announcements. Popular ones release albums, hold concerts and appear on television as themselves.

A seiyu is a voice actor, and in Japan that is a full career rather than extra work between film roles. There are training schools you enter after high school, agencies that manage you, and magazines written about you.

The reason is simple: Japan produces an enormous amount of animation every year, dubs almost all foreign films and dramas for television, and fills its games, adverts and station announcements with recorded voices. That volume supports thousands of professionals.

Over the last thirty years the job has also become a public one. Fans know the names, follow which actor plays which role across different series, and go to concerts where seiyu sing songs from the shows. Some people find that strange, but if you think of them as stage actors who happen to work in a booth, it makes more sense.

QWhy does Japan dub foreign films instead of using subtitles?

Both exist. Cinemas often show subtitled and dubbed versions of the same film, and television usually broadcasts the dubbed version so viewers can watch without reading. That steady television demand is one reason the profession is so large.

QDo voice actors really sing in concert?

Many do. If a character sings in a series, the actor usually performs those songs live, sometimes in character. Whole tours and festivals are built around this, and for some performers the music is a larger part of their income than the acting.

QIs it a well-paid job?

For a small number of names, yes. For most it is not. Pay for anime work is set by a rank system based on experience, the work is irregular, and many voice actors take narration, games and stage work to make a living.

MYTHVoice acting in Japan is done by ordinary actors as a side job.

FACTIt is a distinct profession with its own schools and agencies, although stage and screen actors are sometimes cast in films for name value, which is often debated.
