Japan has a national holiday for older people, Keiro no hi, Respect for the Aged Day, on the third Monday of September. The custom is simple: you show appreciation to the elderly in your life. Grandchildren draw pictures or send flowers, families gather for a meal, and nursing homes and community centers hold small events with songs and gifts.
Many municipalities send a present or a certificate to residents who turn certain ages that year, and the prime minister sends a silver cup to those turning one hundred. The holiday started in 1947 as a village festival in Hyogo Prefecture, where local leaders wanted to honor elders and hear their wisdom, and it spread until it became a national holiday in 1966.
It is also the day when the government announces how many people over sixty-five and over a hundred now live in Japan, so it doubles as an annual reminder of the country's aging. I find it a gentle holiday in a busy calendar.

In practice yes, since most people direct it at their own grandparents. Officially it honors all older people and their contribution to society, so it is also a day for community events and for public discussion of pensions, care and longevity.
実際にはそうで、多くの人は自分の祖父母に向けて祝います。公式にはすべての高齢者と社会への貢献を敬う日なので、地域の催しや、年金、介護、長寿についての公の議論の日でもあります。

何歳からが対象になるのですか。
There is no fixed age. Municipal gifts often start at seventy, seventy-seven or eighty, and many people in their sixties would be offended to be included. Retailers market the day with gifts for grandparents regardless of age.
決まった年齢はありません。市町村の記念品は70歳、77歳、80歳から始まることが多く、60代の多くは含められると気を悪くします。小売店は年齢に関係なく祖父母への贈り物として売り出します。

Flowers, sweets, tea, a meal out, or something practical like a warm blanket. Handmade cards and drawings from grandchildren are the most treasured. Very few people give expensive presents; the point is contact, not spending.

敬老の日は、1947年に兵庫県の野間谷村（現在の多可町）で「としよりの日」として始まった行事が起源とされ、県内から全国へ広がり、1966年に「敬老の日」として国民の祝日になりました。当初は九月十五日でしたが、2003年から祝日を月曜日に移す制度により九月の第三月曜日になっています。この日に合わせて総務省が高齢者人口の推計を、厚生労働省が百歳以上の人数を発表するのが恒例で、高齢化の進み方を示す数字として毎年報道されます。百歳を迎える人には国から銀杯と祝状が贈られます。市町村の記念品の対象年齢は財政の事情から引き上げられる傾向にあり、地域差が大きくなっています。九月には「老人週間」も設けられ、施設や地域の行事が集中します。
