Pokemon is short for "Pocket Monsters," a game series that began in Japan in 1996. The first two games, Red and Green, came out for the Game Boy on February 27th of that year. In the games, you travel around, catch wild creatures, raise them, and battle with them. The key idea was trading.

Two players could connect their Game Boys with a cable and swap Pokemon, because no single game had all of them. That made it something you played with friends, not just alone. The creator, Satoshi Tajiri, has said that the idea came partly from his childhood hobby of collecting insects.

In 1997, an anime series started on Japanese TV, and soon Pikachu became famous worldwide. Later came the trading card game, movies, and in 2016, Pokemon GO, which brought people outside to catch Pokemon on their phones. February 27th is now celebrated as Pokemon Day. For many people outside Japan, Pokemon was their first taste of Japanese culture.

Q

Is Pokemon more popular in Japan or abroad?

Both. In Japan, it's popular across all ages, and the Pokemon Center shops are often crowded. Abroad, many adults who grew up with it in the late 1990s are still fans.

Q

Many of them, yes. Pikachu is the same, but a lot of names were changed for English. For example, Fushigidane in Japanese is Bulbasaur in English, so fans from different countries sometimes can't tell which one they're talking about.
