Famikon is the Japanese nickname for the Family Computer, the home video game console that Nintendo released on July 15th, 1983. It was a small red-and-white machine that plugged into the family TV, and it cost 14,800 yen. Overseas, Nintendo redesigned it as a gray box and sold it as the Nintendo Entertainment System, or NES, starting in 1985.
What made it special was the games. Super Mario Bros., released in 1985, and Dragon Quest, released in 1986, became huge hits, and kids talked about them at school every day. According to Nintendo, about 61.9 million units were sold around the world, including the NES.
The Japanese version even had a small microphone built into the second controller, which some games used. Production ended in 2003, but the music and characters from those years are still everywhere. For many Japanese adults, especially those born in the 1970s and 1980s, famikon is a word full of childhood memories.
