Gachagacha, also called gachapon, are capsule toy machines. You put in a few coins, turn a handle, and a plastic ball drops out with a small toy inside. You cannot choose which one you get, and that is the whole point. The toys are surprisingly well made, often a set of six or twelve, and many buyers are adults collecting a full series.
ガチャガチャは、ガチャポンとも呼ばれるカプセル玩具の機械です。硬貨を入れてハンドルを回すと、小さな玩具の入ったプラスチックの球が落ちてきます。どれが出るかは選べず、そこが肝心なところです。玩具の出来は驚くほどよく、6種や12種で1セットのことが多いので、全種そろえようとする大人の買い手も多いです。

Gachagacha are capsule toy machines, named after the sound the handle makes. Capsule vending itself came from the United States, but Japan turned it into a design industry.
A modern capsule toy costs three to five hundred yen and can be a tiny working stapler, a cat sitting in a bread bag, or a precise model of a train seat. Series usually have six or twelve versions and you cannot pick, so collectors keep going back.
In the last few years whole shops have opened with hundreds of machines lined up wall to wall, and the customers are mostly adults, often women in their twenties and thirties. If you want a cheap souvenir that is genuinely Japanese and not made for tourists, this is it.
ガチャガチャは、ハンドルの音から名づけられたカプセル玩具の機械です。カプセル自販機そのものはアメリカから来ましたが、日本はそれをデザインの産業に変えました。
今のカプセル玩具は300円から500円ほどで、本当に使える小さなホチキス、食パンの袋に座った猫、電車の座席の精巧な模型などが出てきます。1シリーズは6種か12種が普通で、選べないので収集家は何度も戻ってきます。
ここ数年は何百台も壁一面に並べた専門店が増え、客の多くは大人、とくに二十代・三十代の女性です。観光客向けではない、本当に日本的で安いおみやげを探しているなら、これです。

QWhy can't you choose which toy you get?
どうして中身を選べないのですか。
Because the randomness is what sells it. If you could choose, you would buy one and leave. Since you cannot, people try again, trade duplicates with friends, and talk about what they got. The machines are cheap to run, so shops can afford to line up hundreds of them.
ランダムであることが商品だからです。選べるなら1個買って終わりです。選べないからこそ、人はもう一度回し、だぶったものを友達と交換し、何が出たかを話題にします。機械の維持費が安いので、店は何百台も並べられます。
QAre these just for children?
これは子ども向けのものですか。
Not any more. A lot of series are aimed at adults, with jokes and details a child would miss, and the busiest capsule toy shops are full of office workers on their way home. Children's versions still exist, but they are the cheaper machines.
もう子ども向けだけではありません。子どもには分からない細部や冗談を盛り込んだ大人向けのシリーズが多く、混んでいる専門店は帰宅途中の会社員でいっぱいです。子ども向けの機械もありますが、そちらは安い価格帯です。
QWhat do I do with the empty capsule?
空いたカプセルはどうすればいいですか。
Most machines have a box or a slot right next to them for returning the capsule, and it gets reused. Do not put it in a regular bin. Some people keep them for storing earphones or small change.
たいていは機械のすぐ横にカプセルを返す箱や投入口があり、再利用されます。ふつうのごみ箱には入れないでください。イヤホンや小銭入れにするために取っておく人もいます。

カプセル自販機はアメリカで生まれ、日本には1960年代に持ち込まれたとされます。「ガシャポン」はバンダイの登録商標で、「ガチャガチャ」「ガチャ」は音から生まれた一般名です。スマートフォンのゲームで課金してアイテムを引く仕組みを「ガチャ」と呼ぶのも、この機械が語源です。近年は空港や駅に電子決済に対応した機械が置かれ、帰国前に小銭を使い切る手段としても使われています。
