A game center is a Japanese video game arcade. Arcades died out in most countries once home consoles got good, but Japan kept them by changing what they sell. Today the ground floor is usually crane games full of plush toys and snacks, with photo booths and rhythm games upstairs. Many people come to win a prize, not to play a game.
ゲームセンターは日本のアーケードゲーム店です。家庭用ゲーム機が良くなると多くの国でアーケードは消えましたが、日本は売るものを変えることで生き残らせました。今では1階はぬいぐるみやお菓子の入ったクレーンゲームが並び、上の階に写真シール機や音楽ゲームがあるのが普通です。ゲームで遊ぶためではなく、景品を取りに来る人も多いです。

Game centers are Japanese arcades, and they are one of the few places where a 1980s business still works. When home consoles caught up, arcades closed almost everywhere else.
Japanese arcades survived by selling things you cannot get at home: crane games with limited-edition prizes, photo sticker booths, rhythm games with huge drums and dance pads, and cabinets where strangers sit back to back and fight each other.
Entry is free and you pay per play, usually a hundred yen. The number of arcades has been falling for years, and many are now mostly crane games, because prizes make more money than games do. Still, on a rainy Sunday a Japanese arcade is louder and more crowded than almost any other kind of shop.
ゲームセンターは日本のアーケード店で、1980年代の商売が今も成り立っている数少ない場所のひとつです。家庭用ゲーム機が追いついたとき、ほかの国ではアーケードはほとんど閉店しました。
日本のゲームセンターは、家では手に入らないものを売ることで生き延びました。限定景品のクレーンゲーム、写真シール機、大きな太鼓やダンスマットを使う音楽ゲーム、知らない人同士が背中合わせに座って対戦する筐体です。
入場は無料で、1回ごとに、たいていは百円を払います。店舗数は長年減り続けていて、景品のほうがゲームより儲かるため、今はクレーンゲーム中心の店も多いです。それでも雨の日曜のゲームセンターは、ほかのどんな店よりにぎやかで混んでいます。

QWhy are Japanese arcades still open when ours all closed?
うちの国のゲームセンターは全部なくなったのに、どうして日本では続いているのですか。
Because they sell something a console cannot: physical prizes, machines too big for a living room, and a place to meet people. Crane games in particular are closer to a prize shop than to a game, and that is what pays the rent.
家庭用ゲーム機では売れないものを売っているからです。実物の景品、居間に置けない大きな筐体、人と会える場所。とくにクレーンゲームはゲームというより景品店に近く、それが家賃を稼いでいます。
QCan children go in?
子どもも入れますか。
Yes, but there are time limits. Under Japan's entertainment business law, children under sixteen generally cannot stay after 6 p.m. on their own, and anyone under eighteen cannot stay after 10 p.m. Since a 2016 change, most prefectures let under-sixteens stay until 10 p.m. if a guardian is with them, though the rules differ by prefecture.
入れますが時間の制限があります。風営法により、16歳未満は原則として18時以降は一人でいられず、18歳未満は22時以降いられません。2016年の改正以降、多くの都道府県では保護者同伴なら16歳未満も22時までいられますが、規定は都道府県で異なります。

本当にお金が当たるのですか。
No. Arcades can only give out prizes, and the value of a prize is capped, so it is toys, figures and snacks. Machines that pay cash are a different business called pachinko, which is regulated separately.
いいえ。ゲームセンターは景品しか出せず、景品の価格にも上限があるので、玩具やフィギュア、お菓子になります。現金が動くのはパチンコという別の業態で、規制も別です。

クレーンゲームの俗称「UFOキャッチャー」はセガの商標で、本来は同社の機種名です。店員に「もう少し寄せてください」と頼めるのは日本の店の特徴で、取れないまま帰らせるより、取らせて次も来てもらうほうが得だという考え方によります。景品には法律上の価格の上限があるため、高価な品は出ません。店舗数は長期的に減り続けていますが、そのぶん残った店は大型化し、クレーンゲームの比率が上がっています。
