Purikura are photo sticker booths found in arcades and shopping centers. You go in with friends, the machine takes several shots, and then you move to a second screen where you draw on the photos, add text and choose a background. The camera automatically enlarges eyes and smooths skin. The result prints as a sheet of small stickers that you cut up and share.
プリクラは、ゲームセンターや商業施設にある写真シールの機械です。友達と中に入ると何枚か撮影され、その後、別の画面に移って写真に落書きをし、文字を入れ、背景を選びます。カメラは自動で目を大きくし、肌をなめらかにします。できあがりは小さなシールの並んだ1枚として印刷され、切り分けて分け合います。

Purikura is short for print club, and it means a photo sticker booth. The first machine came out in 1995, developed by the game company Atlus with Sega, and it changed how Japanese teenagers kept their photographs.
You crowd into a booth with friends, pose for a few shots, then step around to a drawing station where you write on the pictures with a light pen, add stamps and pick a frame. The machine has already made everyone's eyes larger and their skin paler, and there is no way to turn that off.
Out comes a sheet of stickers, which people used to stick in a special album and swap like trading cards. It is still a standard thing to do on a day out, and many booths now let you send the images to your phone as well.
プリクラは「プリント倶楽部」の略で、写真シールの機械のことです。最初の機種は1995年、ゲーム会社のアトラスがセガと共同で開発して登場し、日本の十代の写真の残し方を変えました。
友達と狭い箱に入り、何枚かポーズをとって撮り、横の落書き台に移って、光るペンで写真に書き込み、スタンプを押し、枠を選びます。そのときにはもう機械が全員の目を大きくし、肌を明るくしていて、それを切ることはできません。
出てくるのはシールの並んだ1枚で、かつては専用のアルバムに貼り、カードのように交換していました。今も出かけた日の定番の行動で、多くの機種は画像をスマートフォンに送ることもできます。

QWhy does it change my face without asking?
どうして勝手に顔を加工するのですか。
The beautifying is the product. Machines compete on how flattering the output is, and customers choose a booth by which look they prefer. Most models let you pick a level of effect, but none of them let you turn it off completely.
顔を良く見せることが商品だからです。各機種は仕上がりの美しさで競っていて、客はどの顔になるかで機械を選びます。多くの機種は効果の強さを選べますが、完全に切れるものはまずありません。
QCan men use them?
男性も使えますか。
Some booths in Japan ask that men enter only with women, and there are signs saying so. The reason given is to keep the space comfortable for the young women who are the main customers. Rules vary by shop, so check the sign at the entrance.
店によっては、男性だけでの利用を断り、女性同伴を求める掲示があります。主な客である若い女性が安心して使えるようにするため、という説明がされています。規則は店ごとに違うので、入口の掲示を確かめてください。
QHow long does the whole thing take?
全部でどれくらい時間がかかりますか。
About ten minutes. Shooting is fast and timed, and the drawing stage has a countdown, so you have to decide quickly. That pressure is part of why it is fun in a group.
全部で10分ほどです。撮影は制限時間つきで早く、落書きの段階にも秒読みがあるので、すばやく決めなければなりません。その慌ただしさも、集団で楽しい理由のひとつです。

YouTube より豆知識
1995年に「プリント倶楽部」として登場したのが最初で、「プリクラ」はその略から広まった呼び名です。当初は撮って印刷するだけでしたが、落書き機能がつき、やがて目を大きくする加工が標準になりました。撮影の場所と落書きの場所を分けたのは、1台で同時に2組をさばくための工夫です。スマートフォンの写真加工アプリが広まった今も、複数人で同じ1枚に写り、その場で紙のシールが出てくるという点が残っている理由だと言われます。
