Juzu are strings of beads held during Buddhist services. The full form has a hundred and eight beads, said to correspond to the same number of worldly desires, and each school has its own shape and way of holding it. Most people own a simplified single-loop version, which is acceptable at any funeral regardless of the school.

Juzu are Buddhist prayer beads, and in Japan almost every adult owns a set, kept in a drawer and taken out for funerals and memorial services.

The formal version has one hundred and eight beads, traditionally matched to the hundred and eight worldly attachments, and each school of Japanese Buddhism has its own length, arrangement and correct way of holding it, usually looped over the hands with the tassels hanging down. In practice, most people carry a simplified single loop with fewer beads, which is accepted anywhere.

Two points of manners are worth knowing. You hold them in your left hand when not using them, and you do not put them down directly on the floor or on a chair: a small cloth or the pocket of your bag is correct. If you are attending a funeral in Japan as a guest and do not own any, going without is entirely acceptable and better than borrowing.

QI don't have any. Is that a problem at a funeral?

No. Going without is perfectly acceptable, especially for a foreign guest. Borrowing someone else's is generally avoided, since beads are treated as personal. If you want a set, any department store or Buddhist supplier sells simplified ones.

QDo I need the right one for the school of the temple?

Only if you are a member of that school. A simplified single loop is the usual solution and nobody will examine it. Formal school-specific beads matter mainly to priests and to families practicing that tradition.
