Jidaigeki are films and television dramas set before 1868, usually in the Edo period. They have their own conventions: a wandering swordsman, a corrupt official, a fight choreographed as dance, and a resolution in the last ten minutes. Many were shot on standing sets in Kyoto that are still there, and the genre has shrunk on television but survives in film.

Almost everything a foreign audience thinks it knows about samurai came through jidaigeki. These are period dramas set before the Meiji Restoration, mostly in the Edo period, and for decades they filled Japanese television the way westerns once filled American.
The conventions are strong: a hero who conceals his rank, a magistrate taking bribes, ordinary townspeople who cannot fight back, and a final confrontation in which the sword work is choreographed like dance, because it is. The choreography has its own craft and its own specialists. Most of it was shot in Kyoto, where studio back lots with permanent Edo streets still stand and are open to visitors.
The genre collapsed on television in the 2000s, partly cost and partly audience age, and a long-running series that had been on air since 1969 ended its regular run in 2011. It continues in cinema, and the annual historical drama on public television remains one of the country's biggest productions.

As accurate as a western. The buildings and clothes are researched carefully, the social detail is often good, and the plots are invention. Sword fights in particular are staged for the camera and bear little relation to real combat.
西部劇と同じ程度です。建物と衣裳はよく調べてありますし、暮らしの細部も確かなことが多いのですが、筋は作りものです。とくに斬り合いは画面のために組まれたもので、実際の戦いとはほとんど関係がありません。

Toei Kyoto Studio Park in Uzumasa is a working studio with an open section, where you can walk Edo streets and watch sword choreography demonstrations. Filming sometimes happens beside the visitors.

The taiga drama, running since 1963, one historical figure or era per year across about fifty episodes. Being chosen brings a large wave of tourism to the places involved, so prefectures campaign for it.
大河ドラマです。1963年から続き、一年ごとに一人の人物や一つの時代を、五十回ほどかけて描きます。取り上げられると、ゆかりの土地に大きな観光の波が来るため、各県が誘致に動きます。
