A furisode is a kimono with very long sleeves, sometimes reaching almost to the floor, and it is the most formal kimono an unmarried woman can wear. The sleeve length is not decoration; it is information. Once a woman marries, she wears kimono with short sleeves, so the garment itself announces marital status.
You see furisode in the largest numbers on the second Monday of January, when the coming-of-age ceremony is held for everyone turning twenty that year, and city halls fill with young women in bright silk. The cost is significant.
Buying one can run to several hundred thousand yen with the obi and accessories, so many families rent, and the rental is often booked a year or more in advance, along with the dressing and hair appointment at five in the morning. It is one of the few days in modern Japanese life when traditional clothing is genuinely the norm.

どうして袖がこんなに長いのですか。
Several explanations are given, including that young women used the sleeves in dance and to signal to a suitor. The historical record is not conclusive, so it is honest to say the origin is uncertain.
若い女性が舞で袖を使った、想いを伝える合図に使ったなど複数の説明があります。史料で確定しているわけではないので、由来ははっきりしないと言うのが正確です。
QCan a married woman wear one?
既婚の女性も着られますか。
By convention no; after marriage the formal choice is a tomesode, with short sleeves. In practice the convention is loosening, and age matters as much as marital status now.
慣習としては着ません。結婚後の礼装は袖の短い留袖になります。実際には慣習はゆるみつつあり、今は既婚か未婚かより年齢のほうが意識されます。
QIs renting looked down on?
借りるのは格好が悪いことですか。
Not at all. Renting is the majority choice, and the industry is built around it. Buying one that will be worn a handful of times is increasingly seen as impractical rather than admirable.
まったくそんなことはありません。レンタルが多数派で、業界もそれを前提に成り立っています。数回しか着ないものを買うのは、立派というより現実的でないと見られるようになっています。

振袖の袖丈は、大振袖で約114センチ、中振袖で約100センチ、小振袖で約85センチとされる。成人式で多く着られるのは中振袖である。既婚女性の第一礼装である黒留袖は、もともと振袖の袖を切って短くしたことに由来し、「留袖」の名もそこから来ているとされる。成人の日は1948年に1月15日と定められ、2000年のハッピーマンデー制度により1月の第2月曜となった。2022年に成人年齢が18歳へ引き下げられたが、成人式（自治体によっては「二十歳のつどい」に改称）は20歳を対象に続ける自治体が多い。着付けと美容室の予約は前年のうちに埋まることが多い。
