A furisode is the long-sleeved formal kimono worn by unmarried young women, most visibly at the coming-of-age ceremony.
A furisode has sleeves hanging almost to the floor, sometimes over a meter long, and is the most formal kimono for an unmarried woman. It is worn at the coming-of-age ceremony in January, at weddings as a guest, and at graduation. The sleeve length is the signal: once married, a woman wears a kimono with short sleeves.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
A furisode is a kimono with very long sleeves, sometimes reaching almost to the floor, and it is the most formal kimono an unmarried woman can wear. The sleeve length is not decoration; it is information. Once a woman marries, she wears kimono with short sleeves, so the garment itself announces marital status.
You see furisode in the largest numbers around Coming of Age Day, the second Monday of January, when most cities hold a ceremony for that year's twenty-year-olds, and city halls fill with young women in bright silk. The cost is significant.
Buying one can run to several hundred thousand yen with the obi and accessories, so many families rent, and the rental is often booked a year or more in advance, along with the dressing and hair appointment at five in the morning. It is one of the few days in modern Japanese life when traditional clothing is genuinely the norm.

As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QWhy are the sleeves so long?
ASeveral explanations are given, including that young women used the sleeves in dance and to signal to a suitor. The historical record is not conclusive, so it is honest to say the origin is uncertain.
QCan a married woman wear one?
ABy convention no; after marriage the formal choice is a tomesode, with short sleeves. In practice the convention is loosening, and age matters as much as marital status now.
QIs renting looked down on?
ANot at all. Renting is very common, as is wearing a mother's or relative's furisode, and the industry is built around rentals. Buying one that will be worn a handful of times is increasingly seen as impractical rather than admirable.

Background
